Make up brush roll tutorial~

So here it is, a small sewing project for a cute make up brush holder. It's really easy to make, you can sew it using a machine or by hand, it's small enough to throw into a travel bag, and you can make it look however you want!

Some more close up shots:

How to measure the fabric:
  • Place the brushes you want to use onto a piece of paper (about an inch apart) and trace around them all with about and inch extra on the sides and bottom and 2-3 inches extra on the top. This will the template for the main part of the roll.
  • Trace the template you just made onto another piece of paper and fold in half, cut along the fold and keep one half, this will become the slots for the brushes.
Materials Needed:
  • One larger piece of material for the main part of the holder.
  • One smaller piece of material for the slots.
  • Edging lace (if desired)
  • Decorative lace (if desired)
  • Ribbon.
  • Button (if desired)
  • Needle and thread
  • Pins
Please forgive my shoddy Photoshop doodles for the tutorial XD The photos I took whilst I was making the roll didn't turn out to clear, so I've sketched them up for a clearer idea of what to do.

Onto the tutorial!!!
  • Cut 2 rectangles of fabric based on the larger template, and one smaller rectangle based on the half template.

  • Hem the top of the small rectangle and attach the lace to the hemmed top. Pin onto the bottom of one of the larger rectangles (right sides up) and sew some lines to make pockets for your make up brushes.

  • Place the 2 large rectangles, right sides together (so it looks inside out) and pin together. Then sew around the edges, but remember to leave a small gap so you can turn it the right way around.

  • Turn the roll the right way around (flip inside out out? XD) Iron it flat (If it's small enough you can get away with straightening irons, my iron was way too big and I burnt myself a couple of times, gave up and used my straighteners ) Then neatly stitch around the edges to keep it neat and seal up the gap you left.

  • Add lace around the plain side if desired, and attach a ribbon to one side. Glue a button onto the joint of the ribbon and Viola! A nice new make up brush roll!

I hope you have fun making the roll. If there's any part of the tutorial that is unclear don't be afraid to ask and I'll update the post. Also if you make one feel free to send any photos, I'd love to see what you guys make!

Take care~

  2. It's a pretty small project, all I used were straight stitches, so you could easily hand sew it :)
